Scotland enjoys no shortage of community organizations, but for me, the Broadford Youth Club may be one of the most important. Communities like Broadford can face many economic pressures and also lack opportunities for children and young adults to engage in healthy activities. This is where organizations like the Broadford Youth Club (BYC) step in to help guide and mentor community members. In its own words, BYC offers “the opportunity for personal and social development for the young people in the South of Skye and Lochalsh. To help them achieve their physical and social potential to aid them grow as individuals and become responsible members of the community.”
While BYC is its own organization that has a diverse range of activities, the Club also enjoys close ties with Sleat and Strath Amateur Football Club. BYC even sports a “junior” football club, whose under 15s arm is traveling to Catalonia, Spain to participate in the Barcelona Football Cup tournament. To support the trip, the team ran the equivalent distance between Broadford and Barcelona, a total of 1,570 miles! In the words of Rory Flyn, BYC’s U-15 co-coach, "The tournament in Spain is an amazing opportunity for our Under-15s team. They are a dedicated group who have been training hard to reach their peak in Spain in October. We are grateful for the continuing support that the Clan Mackinnon Society gives to our community and this donation will help provide a memorable sporting experience for our young people".
As part of its philanthropy program, the Clan MacKinnon Society proudly donated $1,000 (around UK£730) to BYC help offset the significant financial burden of the undertaking. We hope that it is the trip of a lifetime! You can learn more about the BYC and other community organizations at this link. If you’d like to help support the BYC’s Spain trip, you can do so here.
